Swim a Thon
Bur Oak Pool
Start: 8:00 AM
End: 11:00 AM
Hey Dolphins! We are super excited for the swim-a-thon this year! We have decided to change it up and make it more fun for the kiddos! Obstacle course, racing the coaches and multi age relay races. Who would want to miss out on that?! For those of you who haven't participated in a swim-a-thon in the past the children ask family and friends to donate a specific amount per lap the kids swim on the day of the event or they can donate a flat fee. I have attached the pledge sheets below. Half of the money we collect will go toward our swim team and the other half will be donated to the Down Syndrome Association of Houston(DSAH). We have chosen to work with this organization because one of our very own little dolphins, Jackson Faulkenberry happens to have Down syndrome. Here is a note from Anna Faulkenberry, the mother of Jackson... Jackson is 6 years old and the youngest of the Faulkenberry clan. Jackson loves anything Cars (the movie and actual cars), swimming, and playing with his brothers, Michael and Lucas, and his “sissy” Sammi.
You might be wondering what is Down syndrome? Down syndrome is when a person has 47 chromosomes (the things inside us that decide how we will grow, act and if we will look like mom or dad) instead of the usual 46 chromosomes. We like to think of it as Jackson got just a little something extra when God made him! Down syndrome isn’t a disease and you can’t “catch it” (although, if you could catch Down syndrome, it would probably just make you smile more).
Down syndrome makes Jackson look a bit different than other people. You might notice that he’s much shorter than kids his age and he has a flatter nose and smaller ears. Down syndrome also makes it hard for Jackson to talk and he is often difficult to understand. Jackson understands everything other people say to him or around him, but he has trouble answering like you and I would. To help others understand him, Jackson not only talks, but uses sign language for some words that are especially hard for him to say. Jackson also has trouble doing some physical activities because of his Down syndrome because his muscles can be weak. Fortunately, swim is easier than some sports for Jackson to do with his weaker muscles (and he LOVES it)!! We encourage you to share this information with your children so they have a better understanding of what they are swimming for. And please, they encourage you all to come and say hello to Jackson. On Friday, June 1st, during morning practice we will split the groups up by 2 different age brackets.
6 and under ~ 8-9am 7-8 years old ~ 8-9am 9-10 years old ~ 9-10am 11 and up ~ 10-11am ALL AGES (make-up practice time) ~ 7-8pm If you could arrive 5-10 minutes early that would be helpful so we can collect the swimmers pledge sheets and get them set up. The children will then get to meet Jackson, his mother and a member of the DSAH. They will speak a little on the association before we begin the games.
Then the activities will begins! Jackson himself will get us started. If you are available to stay during that time it would be helpful. We need as many volunteers as we can get to count laps, be monitoring the kids as they go thru the obstacle course and so on.
If you have any questions about Down syndrome please contact Anna Faulkenberry. She welcomes any questions that come her way. :) As for the swim-a-thon itself please contact me directly via Facebook or phone/text. 254-723-6193
One last note...we are still looking for sponsors to cover the cost of the t-shirts earned by some of the swimmers. If any of you business owners are interested in donating or learning more please contact me directly asap.
Thank you all!! !Doreen Lorenz |
